甘煥騰先生獻辭

　　2014年，本地和國際大事頻繁，肯定是香港新聞從業員以至全體市民記憶深刻的一年。本地有政改問題引起激烈爭辯，導致歷時79日的佔中運動；內地與香港的關係亦因水貨走私問題而變得緊張。國際上，極端恐怖組織擾亂了西方以及中東的秩序，危及現代文明；西非爆發伊波拉病毒，考驗各國衛生醫療系統的防禦能力；馬來西亞航機失事，數百無辜生命瞬間殞滅。

　　採訪報道這些重大新聞，對新聞媒體是個難度很高的專業考驗。工作在第一線的同業，日以繼夜克盡職責，使廣大受眾通過報紙版面獲取及時、準確的資訊和客觀、深入的分析。在社會事件頻發的情況下，新聞媒體作為行政、立法、司法之外的第四權力，堅守言責，使社會公義得以彰顯，公權力得到合理監察，他們的努力得到市民廣泛的認同和信任。2014年度「香港最佳新聞獎」的所有獲獎作品，充分反映了同業們辛勤不懈的專業成果。

　　在此，我謹代表香港報業公會感謝社會各界支持，尤其是各家贊助機構和所有評審委員。衷心祝賀2014年度新聞獎的各得獎者，期望他們精益求精，繼續發掘優秀的新聞題材，編寫更多引起讀者共鳴的作品。

Message from Chairman of The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong

　　With momentous events breaking out in both Hong Kong and abroad, 2014 is certainly one of the most memorable years not just to journalists but also every member of the community. Locally, heated discussions over political reform culminated in the 79-day Occupy Movement, while tension between Hong Kong and the mainland was also stoked by problems caused by parallel trading. Internationally, extreme terrorist groups sowed fears in the West and the Middle East and threatened to undermine modern civilization. In West Africa, the Ebola outbreak tested the capability of respective countries’ healthcare systems to protect their peoples. The fatal crash of a Malaysian airliner put an abrupt end to hundreds of innocent lives.

　　Reporting these major news events was a tremendous challenge to the professionalism of the news media. Our colleagues on the frontline worked round the clock to provide the public with timely and accurate information as well as objective and in-depth analyses. As social issues arose from time to time, the press – as the fourth estate apart from the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government - stuck to its duty of ensuring that social justice was upheld and public authority properly supervised. Their efforts have been widely approved by the community and the winning entries of Hong Kong News Awards 2014 fully reflected the fruits of their labour.

　　On behalf of The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong, I would like to thank all of our supporters from every walk of the community, especially our sponsors and judges of the news awards. I would also like to congratulate every award recipient and encourage them to continue to spare no efforts to explore newsworthy topics and produce reports that resonate with the readers.
