Introduction
The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong was set up on May 10, 1954 by Hong Kong's four largest newspapers at the time – Kung Sheung Daily News (Kung Sheung Yat Po), Wah Kiu Yat Po, Sing Tao Daily (Sing Tao Jih Pao) and South China Morning Post. The mission of the Society is to foster cooperation within the newspaper industry and promote the progress and welfare of its members. Over the years, the Society's membership has grown from four to fourteen: Sing Tao Daily, Ming Pao Daily News , South China Morning Post, Ta Kung Pao, Wen Wei Po, Hong Kong Commercial Daily, Hong Kong Economic Times, Hong Kong Economic Journal, The Standard, China Daily (Hong Kong Edition), AM730, Lion Rock Daily, Bastille Post and The New Evening Post.
In its early days, the Society organized competitions to recognize the outstanding works of news photographers and reporters. Over time, as the contents of newspapers became more professional and diversified, those competitions evolved to become the annual Hong Kong News Awards, which now give out more than 70 awards. To promote the development of the news industry, the Society organizes study trips and luncheons to facilitate exchanges with local and overseas counterparts. On issues of topical concern to the press, the Society reflects the industry's views to the authorities. The Society contributed to the establishment of the Hong Kong Press Council (2000), Hong Kong Copyright Licensing Association (2001), Journalism Education Foundation (2006) and NewsocHub (2020).
