Alice Kwok
Chairperson, The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong

As Hong Kong leaves behind the trying days of the pandemic and the economy sets to right itself, serious challenges remain. The need for “Good News” is ever more present, along with telling the "Good Stories of Hong Kong" from different angles. Referencing an ancient Chinese proverb, “From history, we learn the good and bad; from our past, we learn the gains and losses,” it is from daily news that we all learn the facts and important events as we move steadily forward. The Hong Kong media has been shouldering this social responsibility, providing high-quality information with professionalism.

The newspaper industry has transformed under the pandemic. With the growth of online media and, with it, digital information, the trend of incorporating technology into newspapers appears irreversible. Many newspaper organisations have been undergoing active digitisation, moving from their roots in print. The marriage between content and technology has boosted traffic and readership, broadening the media's reach of and influence over young minds in a more timely and personalised manner. This union has also brought in higher income generated by ad sales, helping newspaper agencies attain sustainability.

Reinvigorating the industry is no easy task. In addition to costly investment, we also need to rely on the power of tech platforms, all the while guarding against our hard work from being exploited. To shake off the "hegemonic" business practices of tech giants, the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong — in collaboration with member organisations — launched “NewsocHub”, a joint platform for multimedia advertising sales offering a one-stop online ad hub that is credible and has an excellent content environment. Through this hub, advertisers can deliver their message to their intended audience with higher accuracy by being able to choose for themselves whether to place ads in a single agency or multiple agencies. Newspaper organisations, their staff, as well as readers and viewers will also benefit as income generated from the hub will ultimately help lead to better content and the better care of employees.

The development and application of technology has brought the industry new opportunities. In the chase for traffic and readership, we must remain aware of our values, persistent in our core missions, and conscientious in delivering quality content. We must also preserve the comprehensiveness, authority, influence, and the many edges afforded by us. Equally important is that we serve as a link between the past and the future in our work to continue nurturing news professionals that will sustain the growth of the media ecosphere.

The quality of all the entries in the 2022 Hong Kong News Awards is magnificent. This shows that our members are always striving for the best and working hard to defend the quality of content.

On behalf of the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong, I would like to thank all sectors of society, especially members of the judging panels and sponsoring organisations. I congratulate, with all my heart, the winners of the awards. I would also like to thank all journalists for their contribution and dedication to the industry.

Looking ahead, the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong will continue to stand by its mission, raising the professional standards of our industry and pushing it to reach new heights.
